What happens to characters after they've finished their seventh year? I was thinking of taking my character from that time but couldn't find anything about what happens when they've finished. Are the characters dropped?

Squarewarts runs on sort of an infinite time loop. Characters are not moved up years in-game, and they do not graduate. The game is just played out as one very long school year.

SUGGESTION
A LINK TO THE CHAT WOULD BE HELPFUL. D:

I... don't know if there is a way to do that. People generally just add themselves to their buddy lists and then invite themselves to the chat room "squarewarts."

I'd like to apply for a character that was dropped a little while ago, but is it okay if I start them from scratch with a new history and such? I didn't see anything on this in the FAQ section, which is why I'm asking here. >>;

Yes! That is perfectly acceptable!

This is in regards to Original Characters. I love the idea of having OCs here but it would be wonderful if some of the restrictions could be lifted from them.

I understand that no one wishes for a character to be too perfect or powerful but I can't see why they must only be human, or why they can't teach classes. Especially now that the restrictions on classes and the number of them has been lifted. Since we can have any numbers of classes now, why not allow an OC to teach one? They could bring a new dynamic of their own to the situation.

As for restricting them as humans, my point is that this Hogwarts isn't like the normal Hogwarts anyway. There are already more Pure bloods than were ever in the books, and Pokemon have been interwoven into the curriculum for magical creatures so why can't OCs have the freedom to be more creative with their makeup too? I find it a bit disappointing that if you see an OC you already know what they are, it peels away some the mystery and intrigue they might otherwise have.

I'm sure most people would still apply for canon characters anyway.

There's my suggestion and I hope you'll at least consider it. Thanks!

Hi Anon!

Thank you for taking the time to contact us. We really appreciate it.

We have considered and discussed your suggestions, but we have decided to maintain our current requirements for original characters at Squarewarts. Our reasons for this are as follows:

Firstly, while classes and staff positions are not as limited as they have been in the past, additional classes must fit both the character and the setting, and must not overlap too much with current classes. Thus, our staff positions are still limited, and we wish to keep these reserved for fandom characters, especially considering there are many that would be difficult to app as a student or ghost. We feel there is more flexibility with OCs in this regard, as they are the creation of the player applying to play them.

Secondly, while we wholeheartedly agree that Squarewarts is distinctly removed from the world of Harry Potter canon, our vision for Squarewarts is that non-humans, whether staff or students, remain relatively rare and odd. This is also in keeping with our Final Fantasy influence, where most characters are also human. Our current non-human characters reflect this, their status as non-humans being viewed as strange, or kept secret entirely. While we can understand that some players would use the opportunity to have non-human OCs responsibly, we would rather avoid the potential for overly unique and special OCs in terms of rare magical abilities or genetics. We feel that well-developed and thought out OCs can be interesting, have layers, and provide a new and interesting dynamic without being non-human or otherwise abnormal.

As for our having more purebloods than are present in Harry Potter canon, the current mod team has always interpreted book canon as having a large number of characters with unspecified blood status. Regardless, blood purity has never been especially relevant to Squarewarts, as the determination of a canon character's blood status is left to player discretion and interpretation of their character's canon.

One of the concerns which was brought up when we announced that we would allow OCs was the high potential for their "Mary Sue-ing," and we placed limits on OCs in order to reduce that potential. As that was a great concern of our playerbase, and ourselves, we will be keeping these limits in place.

Once again, thank you for taking the time to contact us and give us feedback. Though we do not currently foresee these suggestions being implemented, we will be mindful of them if we decide to make changes to the OC application in the future.

Best,
The Mod Team

So, I have an idea for a small plot with Leoben, and figured I just ought to check with you mods before I went ahead and did it. And I wasn't sure where else to ask.

This is going along with what I set up in his backstory about him still being involved with a few illegal activities. The plot as I see it, involves Leoben receiving a package of illegal material, and having to smuggle it out of Hogwarts. I figure this could lead to various shenanigans happening as he attempts to leave without anyone finding out. Eventually I'd like to see something like this become an ongoing thing, potentially to the point where Leoben's duel identity starts coming to light.

This is just a rough outline at the moment, but is it cool for me to run with this idea?

This is perfectly fine! Just let us know if the plan changes, or when you get more specific.

Thanks!
